Docents and volunteers help shape the museum experience for every visitor who walks through our doors.

At the Northeast Louisiana Delta African-American Heritage Museum, volunteers are the heartbeat of our institution. Whether welcoming visitors, leading tours, mentoring youth, or assisting behind the scenes, volunteers help us fulfill our mission to preserve, uplift, and share the rich legacy of African-American history and culture in our region.

What Is a Docent?

The word docent comes from the Latin docere, meaning “to teach.” At our museum, docents are trained volunteer educators who lead public tours, school visits, and special groups through our galleries and exhibitions. More than guides, they are storytellers, interpreters, and cultural ambassadors—helping visitors make meaningful connections between history, art, and contemporary life.

Docents are vital to the museum’s existence. They extend the work of our curators and educators, creating powerful and often transformative experiences for guests of all ages. In return, docents gain access to exclusive training sessions, educational resources, and a deep sense of purpose in shaping the cultural literacy of our community.

Other Volunteer Opportunities

In addition to docent work, we welcome volunteers in a range of roles, including:

  • Gift Shop Assistants – Help visitors find keepsakes and educational items while supporting the museum’s financial sustainability.
  • After-School Tutors – Provide mentorship and homework help to students in our youth programs.
  • Cafeteria Staff / Culinary Volunteers – Assist in meal preparation, event catering, or community cooking workshops that nourish and uplift.
  • Front Desk / Guest Services – Greet visitors, help with wayfinding, and offer a warm, informative first impression.
